Introduction

This course, SPED 602, is an online, graduate course on special education law. The course will examine the federal, state, and local government roles in special education with special emphasis on case and regulatory law. A focus is placed on understanding special education law necessary in providing services to students with disabilities in a variety of placements. The class is appropriate for special/general education teachers, administrators, or related service providers. The course will be divided into four modules – US Law & History of Special Education Law, Related Legislation (laws that are related special education), Foundations of Special Education Law, and Derivative Principles in Special Education Law. Each module will have three or four lessons that relate to overall topic of the modules. For each module, we will conduct an online, synchronous class meeting (twice in Module 4). In each module, students will take a summative quiz and complete a case review. Students will also complete a review of an online source related to special education law, and make a presentation to a groups of special education stakeholders (e.g., teachers, educational assistants, administrators, parents) on a selected aspect of special education law as a final project.
