Module 2

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Print This Page

Introduction

In this lesson, we will be learning about the Americans with Disabilities (ADA), originally passed in 1990. The ADA is a landmark civil rights law that expands the scope of Section 504 by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability in many spheres of life (e.g., private employers, state and local governments, privately owned businesses and facilities open to public). Understanding the ADA is important for many reasons, including educating our students with disabilities about their rights in life, but it does not have significant implications for the education of students with disabilities beyond those already provided by Section 504 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Advanced Organizer

As you complete the work for the lesson on Section 504, keep in mind:

  • That the ADA is broad and detailed civil rights law that has minimal implications for the education of students with disabilities
  • What a reasonable accommodations is, and the critical role of reasonable accommodations in the first title of the ADA (employment)
  • How private schools are affected by the ADA
  • What ADA mandates about architecture, public transportation, and telecommunications
  • The role of an ADA Compliance Coordinator
